Back to school.....and some sake.....

Friday October 7
Onomichi: 26 and sunny

Today we are of to Onomichi High School. Prior to going to the high school, we traversed the hills of Onomichi to see Senkoji. This shrine (??temple??) has often been compared to Kiyomizudera in Kyoto as it is built into a mountain and hangs over it.

It was a pretty shrine and we were able appreciate the views from such a high vantage point.

We had lunch in Onomichi and I was hanging for a sandwich. Thankfully the coffee shop we stopped in served sandwiches. The food here (at HIC) is starting to grate…..I’d kill for a stir fry!!

At the school we were met by the principal and the head of English and introduced ourselves. Then we observed a Japanese lesson. Students study kokugo or their native language. It was funny to see some kids falling asleep. Classes of 40 kids would be difficult to mange in Oz. Here they are so quiet and don’t talk at all. I wish!!

After watching the class, it was time for our presentation. Mel had kindly ‘volunteered’ to be our spokesperson and she presented the PowerPoint we had all constructed.

Then it was time to sit with groups of students and talk to them in English. A little bit like being back at Nova and asking inane questions. I’m glad I took some photos with me as it made it easier to talk about things. Overall, the students’ abilities were pretty good!

After our presentation, we went to the class’ form room and watched them do soji (cleaning). If only Australian kids were made to clean the school!!!

A tour around the school, looking at the different club activities that are conducted after school, and then it was back home again.

Today was ‘Super Sake Friday’ in honour of the sake festival tomorrow. Dinner was actually decent for a change and enjoyable. We got to drink some sake that the Centre put on for us. We then headed up to the pool room for drinks and conversation. A great nite with everyone sharing something that no-one else knew about them: Marg’s game. I’m keeping those confidences…….for now……
